Music Pastor/Minister Position
Summary
The Music Pastor/Minister will serve as the ministry leader for the music and worship program of St. James Church. The Music Minister is responsible for planning, promoting, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive ministry of worship and music that coordinates with the overall ministry of the church and seeks to fulfill the stated mission of the church.

The Music Pastor/Minister will serve as the ministry leader for the music and worship program of St. James Church. The Music Minister is responsible for planning, promoting, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive ministry of worship and music that coordinates with the overall ministry of the church and seeks to fulfill the stated mission of the church.
Time and compensation
- Part-time/bivocational position; 20-25 hours per week
- Compensation is negotiable based on education & experience
- Paid vacation time is available, to include Sundays
The qualified candidate shall:
- Possess a passion for, and understanding of, music ministry as pastoral ministry.
- Demonstrate a mature Christian faith and show commitment to scripture, prayer, and sound doctrine in accordance with the St. James Church constitution and statement of faith.
- Carry out the duties and obligations of ministry while adhering to the highest standards of integrity, honesty, transparency, and Christian behavior. If married, the Music Pastor/Minister’s spouse should be supportive of ministry at St. James Church.
- Become a member of St. James Church and submit to the governing documents.
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field. Other equivalent theological training and equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
- Possess the following experience and competencies:
- Leading hymns in liturgical worship services (vocal or instrumental)
- Planning and selecting music for worship services in a traditional and liturgical setting
- Choral conducting
- Keyboard/piano competency
- Knowledge of traditional and contemporary hymnody
- Basic audio/visual technology competency
- An appreciation for handbell ministry
The preferred candidate shall:
- Fulfill all of the biblical qualifications for elders as stated in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.
- Hold a Master of Divinity (or Master of Worship Leadership, or Master of Music) in a related field.
- Have some or all of the following proficiencies:
- Organ
- Choral conducting
- Handbell directing
- Solo vocal or instrumental performance
- Composition and arranging
- The ability to train others in choral singing and/or handbells
- Have a passion for developing new avenues of outreach and ministry, such as a community choir, children’s music ministry, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities - the Music Pastor/Minister shall:
- Be supervised by the Pastor and the Church Council.
- Select hymns for the Sunday service each week to reinforce and support sermon themes.
- Coordinate preludes, postludes, offertories, and anthems.
- Plan and coordinate other occasional special music, such as Sunday evening or midweek concerts.
- Direct, rehearse, and select repertoire for the Chancel Choir.
- Coordinate and oversee all other musical elements (i.e. organ, handbells).
- Coordinate with the Pastor to plan special services, including Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, etc.
- Be responsible for purchasing and maintaining all musical and audio/visual equipment.
- Be responsible for maintaining music library and purchasing new music for ensembles.
- Submit an annual budget for the music ministry, track expenses, and maintain vendor accounts relating to the music ministry.
- Serve as a member of the church council and all other committees as appropriate.
- Attend monthly council meetings, as well as any specially called meetings.
- In conjunction with the Pastor:
- Assist with various church administrative duties
- Participate in hospital visitation and other visitations
- Participate in leading weddings, funerals, and baptisms as needed
